Germany has avoided a replay of Nazi intolerance with what it has called a ‘Streitbare Demokratie’ since 1945 – in brief, a democracy that tolerates all but intolerance. As our country now witnesses a rash of democracy-rollback laws nationwide, we will do well to learn Germany’s postwar lesson.
