How Social Responsible Investing Can Be Irresponsible — Pension Fund To Sell Energy Stocks?

The city of Ann Arbor is holding discussions on divesting its pension fund from fossil fuels. It could be argued that this action is a form of ‘socially responsible investing’, but I’d argue that it is quite the opposite. The action would call the pension fund to sell a significant portion of the energy sector, and that action could be quite irresponsible. I think it is one thing to make a stand against one stock, but it’s a completely different story to make a stand against a sector in a pension fund. They can be responsible and complain about individual companies, but they should not throw out an entire sector.
